The Problem and Need

Despite Gabon's upper-middle-income status, healthcare access remains deeply unequal, with peri-urban districts like Angondje left functionally disconnected from affordable care due to a hospital-centered health system with limited primary care reach. High out-of-pocket health costs — among the highest in the region — push families into poverty or force them to forgo care entirely, compounding a heavy burden of tuberculosis, HIV, oral disease, and avoidable vision impairment. This is worsened by a severe shortage of healthcare workers, leaving communities like Angondje without a primary care facility within walking distance.
